Epilepsy Surgery
As one of the sub-specialties within the Neurosurgery Department of Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Epilepsy Surgery is currently a leading and internationally renowned comprehensive epilepsy center in China. The Epilepsy Surgery Division specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of various conditions, including intractable epilepsy, cranial nerve disorders (such as facial spasms, trigeminal neuralgia, and glossopharyngeal neuralgia), tumor biopsies, and other functional brain disorders. In particular, intractable epilepsy is our department's core and distinctive area of expertise. Each year, our Epilepsy Surgery team receives over 30,000 patient visits, performs 2,000 preoperative evaluations, and completes more than 700 surgical procedures.
Over the years, our team has conducted a series of clinical, research, and translational innovation work to address challenges faced by epilepsy patients, including difficulties in localization, low evaluation efficiency, outdated equipment, and limitations of traditional surgical techniques. We have established a standardized preoperative evaluation system, incorporating epilepsy imaging protocols and post-processing techniques, to enhance the precision of patient localization and evaluation outcomes. Furthermore, we have developed multimodal intelligent technologies for precise localization and functional preservation of epileptogenic zones, including neural imaging-based intelligent recognition, intracranial EEG intelligent interpretation, and advanced cognitive function localization. In addition, we are dedicated to the development of cutting-edge devices in epilepsy surgery, such as epilepsy surgical robots, specialized surgical planning software, as well as magnetic resonance-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (MRgLITT) systems, and stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG)-guided radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFTC) electrodes. We continuously explore various minimally invasive surgical treatment methods to address intractable epilepsy, such as SEEG-RFTC, neurostimulation, and MRgLITT.
The above-mentioned achievements have been widely promoted to over 150 epilepsy centers nationwide through hosting national-level epilepsy surgical conferences and the Tiantan epilepsy training program. We have also trained more than 5,000 professionals in the field. In recent years, our Epilepsy Surgery team has published 312 SCI papers, with a total citation count exceeding 5,000, in high-impact journals including Nature Communication, Brain, and PNAS. We have authored the latest edition of "Epilepsy Surgery," published multiple guidelines, expert consensus statements, and operational standards. Our team collaborates closely with domestic and international peers, maintaining long-term partnerships with renowned European and United States centers, such as Grenoble, Marseille, Stanford, Cleveland, and Mayo Clinic. With a commitment to breakthrough innovations, a professional attitude, advanced technologies, and concepts, our Epilepsy Surgery team aims to provide patients with optimal diagnosis and treatment, helping them regain a healthy and fulfilling life.
