The Emergency Department of Beijing Tiantan Hospital was established in the 1990s. Now the Emergency Department has become a professional discipline and been adapt to the development of modern emergency medicine, having an independent emergency building with a total floorage of 6,000 square meters and its own unique style and mode of treatment. Currently, the emergency department is divided into four functional areas: reception area, infusion area, observation area and intensive care area. There are 60 beds in the emergency observation room, 18 beds in the resuscitation room, 24 beds in the emergency intensive care unit, and 10 beds in the emergency ward. The annual emergency consultation is more than 200,000 person times.
The Emergency Department is equipped with domestic first-class advanced equipment such as ventilator, monitor, defibrillator, gastric lavage machine, bedside blood purifier, blood gas analyzer, tracheoscope, invasive temporary pacemaker, etc. It also has independent medical and technical examination departments: radiology, emergency CT and MRI, emergency B-ultrasound machine, as well as an independent emergency pharmacy and emergency cashier.
The Emergency Department has a young medical team with solidarity, progressiveness, and dedication. There are 171 medical and nursing staff in the emergency department, with 28 permanent doctors including 4 chief physicians, 5 deputy chief physicians, 11 attending physicians and 8 resident physicians. The doctors’ education levels are 6 physicians with medical doctor degree, 19 physicians with medical master degree and 3 physicians with bachelor degree.
In 2006, the Emergency Department of Beijing Tiantan Hospital established the Emergency Department of Capital Medical University, together with Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Youyi Hospital, Xuanwu Hospital and Tongren Hospital. In 2007, the Emergency Department of Beijing Tiantan Hospital became the designated hospital for high-risk maternal resuscitation and Beijing Cerebrovascular Disease Treatment Center. In 2011, the Emergency Department was approved by the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau as a standardized training base for emergency resident physicians and began to recruit trainees. At the same time, it was the linked department of the standardized training base for general practice resident physicians. In 2014, the Emergency Department became the training base of AHA cardiopulmonary resuscitation. In 2015, the department was granted with master degree tutorial application. In 2016, the Emergency Department became the base of the pharmacology of emergency medicine. In 2017, the Emergency Department was awarded the training base for emergency tracheoscopy and the training base for the standardized treatment of enteral nutrition by the Capacity Building and Continuing Education Center of the National Health Care Commission. In 2021, the department set up the resuscitation center for critically ill children. The department has been undertaking urgent and intensive care resuscitation, public emergencies, in-hospital infection resuscitation, and national/international support services. The department has competitive strengths inclinical practices, clinical teaching and clinical research, so it has become a clinical teaching department with distinct characteristics of integrating medicine, teaching, and research.
